Little BIG Africa was conceived in 2004, after Bikie and Debs felt that rural communities, despite being the target population of numerous large-budget national and international charities, were not really experiencing the kind of positive and life-changing impacts that they should have been
Both Bikie and Debs have spent all of their careers, now totalling eighteen years, working in development mainly in East Africa. Between them, they have BAs in Development Studies and African Studies, an MA in Development Studies and an MSc in HR Management and Development. They have trained and hosted over five hundred local and international volunteers to work on development projects (and still training more!)

Since the inception of LBA, Bikie and Debs have committed their free time to working alongside these rural communities to implement projects that make a difference to the lives of so many families: families that had previously lived without hope of a healthy life.

Seven years later, a few sleepless nights and many more rewarding days have passed, and LBA is growing stronger and stronger. Friends and family have come on board, helping LBA to realise more and more dreams: not just those of LBA, but more importantly those of the children, parents, teachers and families in the rural communities where LBA are able to work.

LBA has recently welcomed Claire Scrutton to the Board of Trustees. Claire was elected Chair of the Trustees for the year 2010/11.

The LBA team
Isa Sematimba has a degree in Adult and Community Education from Kyambogo University. He first came into contact with LBA in 2007 when he approached LBA to host him for his university internship. His skils and life experiences complemented what was already in place at LBA and on completing his degree in 2008, LBA invited Isa to come and work in Manafwa where he has been living and working ever since.

Anna Sharratt first volunteered with LBA in 2007 when she spent six weeks at Nemba Primary School on the LBA's University Summer Project. She continued working with LBA from the UK as the president of one of LBA's partner organisations based at Bristol University. After finishing her degree in Philosophy at Bristol Anna decided that she didn't want to be a philosopher and instead wanted to continue working with LBA in Uganda, so she moved to Mbale in August 2009 and has been working with LBA ever since. Anna loves living and working in Uganda and especially enjoys working in all of the LBA schools and says "there's something really special about getting a class of 150 kids all singing together." Her favourite LBA moment is from the 2010 Funday when the kids from all seven placement schools danced and sang to the world cup song 'Waka Waka': "I have never seen so much joy on so many kids' faces."

Ariana Chamberlain graduated in 2010 with a degree in Ancient History and Archaeology at Bristol University. After volunteering with LBA on the University Summer Project in 2009, Ariana could not wait to return to Uganda and is now back working with LBA. She enjoys village life, living in the heart of the projects, in the lush and beautiful district of Manafwa. Ariana is currently working on a project to promote fuel efficiency in LBA communities, as well as researching stove construction technologies.
