| Hand Dug Wells are literally what they say they are - wells dug out by hand. A reinforced hole is dug downwards below the water table, which allows water to collect in the well, and be raised to the surface by a hand pump fitted over the well. Some villages do not have natural springs or have springs which are not suitable for protection. A Hand Dug Well is the next affordable option for water provision after a protected spring. It is often very remote and water-scarce areas where these wells are constructed. |
