Steve COMPLETES Ironman Lanzarote for LBA

Donation Total So Far (it's not too late):

£1595.54

Read Steve's Race Report and experience the full horror yourself!!

The first Ironman – a gruelling event that pushes its participants to the limits of endurance – was held on February 18, 1978, to see which athletes were the fittest: runners, cyclists or swimmers. Whilst the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii is the pinnacle of Ironman races, Lanzarote – the island of volcanoes – is considered one of the hardest courses in the world. The island of Lanzarote, in the Canaries, is a land of contrasts. A sliver of arid, hot, volcanic land buffeted by winds that never cease to blow, it is also home to a host of delightful beauty spots and breathtaking landscapes. And over this last two decades the island has provided a stunning backdrop for what is without doubt one of the toughest endurance races in the world.

The event is seen as a true test as participants take on the environment and the elements. Ironman Lanzarote sends its competitors out into the unforgiving and relentless hills of this volcanic lump nestling up to the coast of North Africa for a single 112-mile (180km) loop with more than 9000ft (2600m) of climbing, then fries them with a four-lap, out-and-back coastal marathon run which has seen roadside temperatures top 30 degrees Celsius. Here the winds blow hard, the sun is relentless and the hills just have to be seen to be believed.

Why Little Big Africa?
Little BIG Africa (LBA) is a charitable organisation that prides itself on enabling low cost development to take place in the heart of rural communities. Working hand in hand with the local communities as well as the District Administration to ensure long term sustainability, LBA works to enhance and protect natural resources, allowing people to live in harmony with their environment. This means ensuring communities can make the most of free and readily available materials such as water, whilst ensuring other limited resources in the environment, such as trees, are used sparingly and replenished from generation to the next. In contrast to larger organizations with large administration costs, with LBA donations go direct to projects, with a small proportion of giftaid covering administration charges.

LBA was set up by two of my best mates – Debs and Bikie.

I first met Debs in 2001 whilst volunteering for another international development charity in the UK, after I had worked in Zimbabwe on a health education project for a year and she had been working on a similar project for the same organisation in Tanzania for two. I met Bikie in 2003 when I was doing postgraduate research in Uganda alongside the charity he was working for. This was also when Debs moved out to Uganda to work for the same organisation as Bikie, and I was also there the night Debs met Bikie. They've been together ever since, we've been friends ever since, and I've been following the development of their LBA creation since the early set up discussions over the odd bottle of Ugandan Club!

A Big THANK YOU to all the following who have donated so far...

Gillian Main

David Simon

Lorraine McCormack

Peter & Liz Monzani  -  Sometimes being a complete nutter helps!! So where do you go now for a REALLY BIG challenge??

Alan Mitchell  -  sponsored Steve per kilometre. Congratulations and well done.

Christopher Jones

Tim Logan  -  What a nutter!

Laurence Harding  -  for completing the Ironman and not getting beaten by a 65yr old woman.

Katie Willis

Tim Burns

Katy and Jo Harper  -  better late than never... Congratulations, hope you have recovered by now! We met Trevor and Moira in Greece around 5 years ago and feel like we know you, even though we've never met. Anyone who can survive a household that produces Yuletide ditties of such dire length and couplets composed with such ridiculous rhymes and such abysmal alliteration deserves our support...

Ashley Ames

Rich Murgz  -  I studied "colouring in" and "join the dots" with Steve at Uni and think he's madder than a mad hatter at a tea party. The only thing I ask is that he kindly imparts some of his triathlon wisdom on me before I drown in Dorney lake in July.

Andrew Wood

Mike & Clare Wall  -  Dear Prof, You're a legend. A crazy testosterone filled legend, but a legend all the same. Love Clare & Mike

Ann Gorvett

Bob & Ros Stott

Mrs Tilbury

Pauline Shimell

Avshalom Ashman

Ciaran Suter

Alex Hunt  -  I was Steve's flatmate at Uni. No task but I think this might have to be the end of our friendship. The weirdo line has been crossed!!! Good luck

Brian McIntosh  -  Steve is my line manager at work. I think he is absolutely mental doing this but I reckon he will ace it. Best of luck, Steve!

Karen Robinson  I've got my fingers and toes crossed that you have a good race!

Pete Morgan

Julien Lhomme

Claire Scrutton  -  Good Luck Ste x

James & Nat  -  Good luck and enjoy it! Whilst you are saving potentially 1,131 trips to the well for the villagers, have you tried to explain to them quite how it has been paid for?

Debbie Lee Chan

Sandy & Pam Scott  -  Steve does not need to complete a specific challenge - as far as we are concerned he has already done so in his training for the event! Best of luck Stephen.

Kate Brough

Nick Allen

Lucy Clements

Sheonaidh Johnston  -  I donated just for Steve being crazy enough to go and try it. Whatever he completes I'm impressed!

Hayk Gyuzalyan

Peter Bell  -  Steve - you are a freak, but best of luck!

David Fenwick

Charlie & Elaine Mitchell  -  I knew Stephen was very sporty and fit but I didn't realise how completely MAD he was!!!

Nicola Jamie  -  Steve, you're such a nutter. It makes me think that the marathon training i gave you (blagged...) back in 2001 must have been pretty inspirational! tee hee

Ian Logan

Ken Thompson & Swarmteams - Good Luck Steve

Sarah Bell  -  Feel like I should make another reference to the bell genes?!
hmmm...guessing you got all the crazy ones! hehe go bro, we'll have a
wheelbarrow at the ready to get you over the finish line if needed! ;-)
lotsluv sis

David Steventon

Laura Clarke  -  Make Team DCC proud - we'd like to see full use of arm bands, backies and piggy backs.  Shall be thinking of you, you poor, brave madman! Laura x. (Oh and fundraising tip you might want to bear in mind:  Photos of landscapes - good.  Photos of Steve in lycra - very, very bad.)

Jim & Heather Platt

John Izard

Peter Braggins

Jean & Edward Glendinning  - We're neighbours of the 'Bells'. Hope you do well, Steve, you must be mad!!!

Rob Steggle

Stuart Bell  -  I am Steve’s uncle. By the way,  has anyone seen my genes?

Richard Davis  -  Good luck Steve. Sounds like more fun than the marathon.

Trevor Bell  -  Hi, I'm Steve's dad. Where on earth have all these genes come from - very worrying??!!

Tom Shimell  -  I earned this in 1 hour tutoring a boy chemistry - for 11 hours of pain, it's yours.

Meghann Jones

Alison Owen

Andrew Cleary  - Sponsored per km for Steve to finish the whole thing!

Simon Massey  -  I have donated to Steve's LBA sponsorship fund just for attempting to do an Ironman!

Gary Rancourt

Johanna Shapira

Sally Panayiotou

Robyn Matthews

Ali Ziff  -  Hiya! I sit next to Steve at work. I have donated and that's just for being crazy enough to do this at all (don't expect him to do it in a certain time or anything, that would just be mean!) Cheers.

Amelia Isharaza  -  Dear Uncle Prof, I emptied my piggy bank for you. Good luck in Lanzarote and come and visit us again soon. Lots of love, Amelia xx
