Donation Total So Far:

£890.00

Many of you may not have heard from us for a while as we are currently travelling through India and Nepal. But we are soon to put our bags down for a couple of weeks and join up with LBA to construct a 10,000 litre water tank in a primary school in Manafwa, Uganda in East Africa. Although putting our bags down, it is still going to be hard work as we will join the engineers and local community members for some 7am starts to make no less than 500 soil compressed bricks with our very own bare hands. These will form the walls of the tank which are reinforced with steel wiring, cemented in place and completed with a concrete dome to keep all kinds of wildlife out the tank. We will also attach gutters to the classrooms to collect rainwater which feeds into the tank, and finally we will design and paint the tank in our very own artistic style!

Water tanks are vital for rural schools in Uganda. Many pupils, most especially girls, are sent to collect water for school use up to an hour's walk away (each way) meaning vital learning time is missed out on whilst they are collecting water. Without this water however, there is no access to handwashing after using the toilet or before eating, there is no access to drinking water at the school, there is no water to clean the classrooms or to dampen the mud floors and prevent dust being an issue in the classroom. Most schools without access to water are unable to provide meals for either teachers or pupils as there is no water for cooking or washing up, and many girls find they have to drop out of school when they begin their menstruation due to the lack of sanitation at the school.

The water tank we are going to construct can change this for a whole school. LBA has already constructed 37 tanks for primary schools throughout the local area and continuously identifies new schools which would desperately benefit from having access to water at the school. As we undertake this life changing project for the school, we are requesting that you can support us in any way you can to help us reach our target and construct this tank. The school has already begun collecting locally available materials like sand and hardcore but some materials, the transport of these materials from the nearby town, and the labour are just too expensive for the school to afford as it receives less than £2 per pupil from the government for running the school.

We would appreciate anything you can give, however big or small, and promise to provide you lots of pictures of the school and the tank (and us trying to manly at 6pm after 11 hours of manual labour!!) Once you have donated, please email Debs to say your donation is destined for our project, and leave us a comment which LBA will put up on the fundraising page.

Although we have reached our fundraising target (and an enormous thank you to everyone who has got us this far), don't let that put you off supporting us. All the money raised will go towards a second tank or protecting a water source in a nearby village which will provide clean drinking water for a local community.
