Alice and Jonathan go volunteering in Uganda for LBA to protect a water source

On the 27th December, as soon as all the present giving, carol singing and over-eating of Christmas has finished, my brother Jonathan and I will be jetting off to Uganda. I'm going to Uganda to do my medical elective and Jonathan is coming out with me for his first taste of Africa. Together we're volunteering with Little Big Africa and we're hoping to protect a water source to provide clean water for a small village in the East of Uganda, near Mbale. We both feel that we want to do some volunteering, to feel that we're integrating into a community and giving something back, rather than just being tourists passing through. Several of my friends have volunteered with Little Big Africa and they thoroughly recommended the charity as being well organised and doing projects that are sustainable and supported by the local community. We decided on something to help provide clean drinking water for people as we felt a water source would be a really valuable asset to a community. Under 5 mortality is still a shocking 14% in Sub-Saharan Africa and diarrhoea - which is commonly caused by contaminated water sources- still accounts for almost 20% of that mortality rate. Previous volunteers with Little Big Africa have told me its an incredibly rewarding experience to see a muddy puddle transformed into clean flowing water.

Protecting the water source will take us about 6 days and we'll have a Ugandan engineer with us the whole time to direct us. During our time we'll be staying with a local family, living as they live, and really getting into the Ugandan way of life! Although our accommodation and food etc is covered, we need to raise £600 between us to fund materials and to pay for the engineer. We've paid for our flights and additional costs, so money raised will go directly to Little Big Africa for us to protect the water source. To start off the fund-raising I'm going to be running a 10km run in Tatton Parkon the 13th December. I've already been training so please sponsor me for the run, and support my brother and I in raising enough funds to protect the water source and provide clean water for a whole community! Any contribution you can give us, however small, will be really, really appreciated. Thank you so much in advance for all your help and support.
